Couples Flying and Men in Knots-A Visit to the UniverSoul Circus

Dec 17, 2020
Written by: Jonathan Buechner   Hi everyone! My name is Jonathan and I am the new summer intern for Rainbow Me. I am excited to learn more about the company as well as find ways to maximize its outreach. On Tuesday night, I had the opportunity to attend the UniverSoul circus at the Greensboro Coliseum. I had never previously heard about it, but I am very glad I had the chance to go! Different from other circuses I have been to, this one featured a cast from all around the world! It has been around for 23 years and has performed over 10,000 shows across the nation. Since its founding, more than 30 countries have been represented under the UniverSoul Circus bigtop. The Circus does an excellent job of merging cultures from every continent with America’s urban culture for an unforgettable experience.

The show began with traditional Limbo dancing from the Caribbean with bright costumes. Other performers included an aerial acrobatic couple from Colombia, a trio of contortionists from Ethiopia, American motorcyclists, trapeze artists from Cuba, and traditional dancing from China. The show even included 3 adorable elephants from Africa who did some extraordinary tricks. I had never seen such a setlist of varied acts and I feel like I gained a greater cultural appreciation for the people of each of these countries once the show was over. However, the best part was the crowd! The music was lively and everyone was cheering their hearts out for the performers- you could tell they really appreciated the love and support. There were plenty of dance breaks in between and chances for the audience to get on stage in a series of dance-offs. Personally, my favorite part of the show was the magician. He and his partner put 6 girls in cages and when they lifted the curtain...out came tigers! It was the most incredible magic trick I had ever seen.
