The (Only) 6 Halloween Movies with Diverse Main Characters

Dec 19, 2020

Hey RainbowMe Family! I started this post with the idea to list the top 10 movies for kids for the Halloween season that feature diverse main characters.  You know how we do, a #RainbowMeApproved list. Well, I looked, and looked.....and looked some more. THERE ARE NOT EVEN 10!!!! Freeform, formerly ABC Family  has 31 days of Halloween, where they show different movies for Halloween each day. There appear to be at least 50 kid friendly movies about Halloween, or centered around Halloween. This includes the Halloween movies on Netflix, Halloween movies on Disney+ and Halloween movies on Hulu. Out of the 50 there are 5 that feature a main character of color. So, here you go, the ONLY 5 Halloween movies that feature diverse main characters.

UPDATE 10/12/2022

We are excited to add another movie to the list! Keep in mind however, this one is definitely for the older kids (TV-14) it is a family movie, but may be a little scary for the little littles. Netflix is introducing a new movie this season featuring Kelly Rowland and Marlon Wayans.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow

The synopsis says: A man and his daughter must team up to save their town after an ancient and mischievous spirit causes Halloween decorations to come to life and wreak havoc. Coming out October 14, so enjoy some family fright over the weekend.

Twitches

Reunited on their 21st birthday, twin sisters (Tia Mowry, Tamera Mowry) use their magic powers to save their kingdom from the forces of darkness.

Twitches 2

(It was important to include part two to at least get to 5 movies) Twin sisters and twin witches Alex and Camryn didn't meet until they were 21, but their combined power managed to save their home from the forces of darkness. Since then they have been working together to strengthen their magic powers.

The Haunted Mansion

Workaholic real estate agent Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) is accused by his wife, Sara (Marsha Thomason), of neglecting his son (Marc John Jefferies) and daughter (Aree Davis), so he takes the family on a vacation. Along the way, the family stops off at a sinister mansion that Jim has been asked to sell, only to discover it's haunted by Master Gracey (Nathaniel Parker) ; his stern butler, Ramsley (Terence Stamp) ; and two other servants who need some help breaking a curse.

Coco

So Coco is not "Halloween"  but is a movie that celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, an annual October celebration that occurs after Halloween. Despite his family's generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Héctor, the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history. (Featuring Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Benjamin Bratt)

The Witches

This one releases on HBO Plus on October 22 and we couldn't be more excited. A classic Roald Dahl tale, this remake is sure to be a crowd pleaser. A little boy and his kindly grandmother thwart the efforts of a coven of witches to rid Britain of children by turning them into mice. Featuring Octavia Spencer, Chris Rock and Jahzir Bruno.

We know Halloween may look a little differently this year for everyone. It is always  a good time, to grab some popcorn, add some candy, and watch one of these wonderful RainbowMe approved Halloween movies.
